The paper Multifunctionality of chiton biomineralized armor with an integrated visual system is featured on the cover of Science and in an In Depth article. Read the MIT press release here.
The paper “A highly conspicuous mineralized composite photonic architecture in the translucent shell of the blue-rayed limpet” describes the photonic structures that lie at the origin on the bright blue colors in the translucent calcified shell of the blue-rayed limpet Patella pellucida. This work results from a collaboration with the groups of Joanna Aizenberg at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Christine Ortiz at the MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
